This farmer of Madhya Pradesh earned lakhs of rupees annually through mixed cropping in just 3.5 acres of land

Mixed Cropping: From Girwai village in the Madhya Pradesh area of Gwalior comes Nahar Singh Kushwah, a farmer. Rather than holding a Bachelor of Arts degree, he was confronted with the hard truth of joblessness. Nahar attempted to draw strength from his origins after failing to get steady employment. His family had farmed for many generations, so in 2012, having run out of other possibilities, he completely shifted his career towards agriculture. His initial action was to get in touch with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in order to study contemporary agricultural methods. A path of commitment and diligence towards a brighter future lay ahead.

Success with Mixed Cropping

Nahar’s 3–3.5-acre farm developed into a center for a variety of crops. He recognized that growing only one crop was too hazardous, so he made the strategic choice to plant brinjal, coriander, radish, spinach, and roses. “The other crop will support us if one fails,” he says, emphasizing his choice to engage in mixed farming. In an off-season, he even tried with cucumbers, a summer produce, demonstrating his inventive spirit.

This strategy focused on flourishing rather than merely surviving. Roses bloomed alongside vegetables on Nahar’s farm, transforming it into a colorful mosaic where various crops complemented one another. His faith in diversity gave him the courage to confront erratic weather patterns and shifting consumer needs. In addition, he grows mushrooms in order to supplement his income.

Harmonizing Inorganic and Organic Approaches

Nahar acknowledges that while a growing number of farmers are switching to organic farming, he still uses more inorganic techniques. He claims, “I’ve found that inorganic methods give me better yields, but organic farming is good.” He hasn’t given up on organic food entirely, however; he keeps trying in the hopes of finding a balance that would eventually provide him both quality and quantity.

Introducing New Produce to the Marketplace

Nahar’s labors are rewarded at the Gwalior local markets, where he sells his freshly picked flowers and veggies. He makes between Rs. 5 and 7 lakhs a year because of his hard work, meticulous crop planning, and market knowledge. For him, creating a sustainable company that secures his family’s future is more important than merely farming.

Speak Up for Conventional Seeds and Botany

Nahar is a fervent supporter of traditional seeds and believes they are often disregarded in favor of hybrids. He’s certain that “we must not forget the value of traditional seeds,” contending that these seeds are essential to keeping farming in a balanced and healthy manner.

In addition, he exhorts other farmers to experiment with floriculture and diversify. “Avoid focusing just on one crop. Try veggies, try flowers—try anything out. If we let it, the land can provide so much more,” he says, his eyes brightening with the possibilities.

Acknowledgment and Strengthening of Other Farmers

Nahar’s efforts were acknowledged in 2018-19 when the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) at the district level gave him an award and a monetary reward of Rs. 25,000. However, this notoriety is only the start for him.

Nahar’s dedication to his community is what really sets him apart. He often instructs other farmers, imparting his expertise and assisting them in implementing improved methods. His objective is to improve everyone around him in addition to achieving success for himself.

Growth-Based Future

The transformation of Nahar Singh Kushwah from a young guy having trouble finding work to a well-known and creative farmer is an example of adaptation and resiliency.
