Success Story: A 35-year-old farmer from Kota, Rajasthan, named Lokesh Kumar Meena, is a living example of perseverance and commitment in the agricultural industry. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree and an ITI certificate, Lokesh started farming in 2015. He comes from a long line of farmers that goes all the way back to his grandfather’s generation, and he has mastered the art of fusing traditional farming practices with contemporary approaches.
He is now prospering in both farming and apiculture, generating an amazing yearly income of up to Rs 8 lakhs due to his flexibility and unwavering hard work, which have allowed him to overcome many obstacles.
Strategies for Crop Diversification and Yield Management
Over 40 bighas of land are farmed by Lokesh. He cultivates black gram, mustard, and wheat there. To increase production, he employs enhanced crop types. He cultivates PBW 373 and Raj 4079 for wheat. The remarkable output of 9–10 quintals per bigha is produced by these genotypes. Three to four quintals of his mustard crop variety Pioneer 45S46 are produced per bigha. Additionally, three to four quintals of black gram are produced every bigha. In the past, Lokesh planted garlic but suffered large losses. He was inspired by this setback to concentrate on reliable crops and look for fresh prospects.
Taking a Chance on Apiculture
To diversify his sources of income, Lokesh started his profession in apiculture. He reduces his use of traditional crops. He argues that farming really needs diversification. The honeybees consume the mustard blooms as he increases the harvest.
In this manner, he can both develop mustard from the crops and provide food for his bees. At the moment, he has 500 honeybee colonies. On average, each bee colony yields 30 kg of honey every year. This business endeavor has changed the game. He is receiving a sizable and consistent supplementary income from it.

The trip hasn’t been simple for Lokesh. He learned the value of diversity and sustainable techniques from the garlic farming disaster, which was a pivotal moment. He spends time and energy on his farm and refrains from using pesticides excessively. He doesn’t use the toxic ones since the honey bees are chemically sensitive. Both farming and apiculture have been successful endeavors for Lokesh.

Lokesh’s dedication to apiculture and farming is the reason for his success. He receives up to Rs 8 lakhs a year from his combined business, which has helped him achieve financial security and set an example for others in the community.
