Success Story: This farmer from Himachal Pradesh earned a huge profit of Rs 10 lakh annually from polyhouse and solar fencing

Success Story: Over the last 20 years, Mahendra Singh, a forward-thinking farmer from Bhutlahar village in the Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, has established a prosperous agricultural business. He has adopted a diverse strategy, growing a range of fruits, vegetables, crops, and mushrooms on his 20 kanals of property. By switching from conventional to contemporary agricultural techniques, he now makes Rs 10 lakh a year.

Beginning Small with Conventional Farming

At first, Singh used conventional farming techniques to grow staple crops like wheat and maize. But he was unhappy since these crops didn’t bring him much money. When he discovered the government’s “Dr. YS Parmar Kisan Baagwan Samridhi Yojana,” which seeks to assist farmers in boosting their incomes via the use of contemporary agricultural methods, his circumstances altered in 2017.

Constructing Polyhouses for Vegetable Production

Singh gained knowledge about how polyhouses may shield plants from unfavorable weather conditions via this program, enabling him to cultivate vegetables in a controlled setting. Through government funding, he constructed three 250-square-meter polyhouses. He started growing tomatoes, bell peppers, and cucumbers in these polyhouses, and they were successful and profitable.

Overcoming Obstacles

Even if polyhouses were successful, Singh still had trouble cultivating on his open fields. It was hard to raise anything since stray livestock and wild animals ruined his crops. Singh requested aid under the “Mukhyamantri Khet Sanrakshan Yojna” in 2018, and the government installed solar fences to safeguard his farms. By keeping the animals away, he was able to cultivate vegetables in his wide fields without worrying about damage all the time.

Adding Mushrooms and Fruits

Singh proceeded beyond veggies. He increased the range of his produce by expanding his farm to include fruits like lemons, apples, and peaches. By establishing two mushroom units to cultivate button and oyster mushrooms, he also took a go at mushroom farming. These mushrooms turned into yet another profitable venture.

An Inspiration to Other Farmers

Singh’s experience shows that by using contemporary methods and utilizing government programs, farmers may greatly raise their revenue. Other farmers are inspired by his success to investigate technologies like polyhouses and solar fences and to go beyond conventional farming practices.
