Mustard cultivation: Despite living in Delhi, farmer Jagdish Singh of Malerna village in Ballabhgarh has dedicated his life to farming. On 13 acres, he grows mustard. He has made farming his job and tradition thanks to his hard work and expertise.
The cultivation process of mustard
Jagdish Singh described the full mustard-growing process. The land must first be plowed eight to ten times. Mustard seeds are then planted. One acre of land requires around 1 to 1.25 kilogram of seeds. Additionally, one bag of DAP and one bag of potash must be added. The crop has to be watered one or two times. In three months, the mustard crop will be ready.
After mustard, crops
By March, the mustard crop is ready. Farmers then grow crops such as moong. Ballabhgarh Mandi is where the harvest is sold after it is ready.
Advantages and difficulties
According to Jagdish Singh, growing mustard requires a lot of work, but the yield is not particularly high. Bad weather may have an impact on production. Although mustard crops are not infected with insects, they are more susceptible to the Champa bug during inclement weather.
Experience on a farm
At the age of 14, Jagdish Singh began farming. He became fully immersed in farming after high school. He still farms and views it as his primary occupation at the age of 72.
Farmers like Jagdish Singh embrace farming as their identity and culture in addition to using it as a source of income. A significant aspect of their lives, mustard farming reflects their experience and hard work.
