Betel cultivation: Betel cultivation is now being done on a large scale in our state Bihar. Farmers make betel huts using nethouses, straw or wood because betel cannot be grown in open fields. Even after this, farmers continue to grow betel in these betel huts for many years. Apart from this, the growers gradually expand the area of cultivation. But during this time they undoubtedly consider how much area they will be able to grow in betel cultivation.
There are more myths about betel cultivation by the Chaurasia community in Bihar. Due to the lack of interest of the government in this commercial commodity, betel has not yet got the status of horticultural crop and other farmers cannot be encouraged to grow it. Ramvilas Thakur of Khagaria region also appealed to the administration while telling the media about his experience of growing betel. Know from the news…
Betel cultivation started from one kattha and reached ten kattha
Ramvilas Thakur has been cultivating paan for the last 60 years in this village located near Gauchari railway station in Jamalpur area of Gogri subdivision and about 30 km away from Khagaria district headquarters. He inherited the family business of paan cultivation from his father. From one kattha received from his father, he increased the paan cultivation to ten kattha. Cultivating more than this at the age of 68 is challenging. According to him, he grows Desi, Calcutta, Patan, Maghai and Bangla varieties of paan.
When paan leaves are given khali (cake), they become green
Tropical environment is necessary for paan vines. Both swampy and high lands are suitable for its cultivation. Which can be found in the soil of Khagaria district and the surrounding areas. In other words, if they want, other farmers of the area can also cultivate paan. However, due to floods, things can get a little challenging for the farmers here. Farmer Ramvilas told that apart from DAP fertilizer, he also uses Khalli. By applying Khalli to the roots of betel leaves, the leaves appear green.
Gets a higher price for this
The use of DAP also increases the production of betel leaves. Earning 1.50 lakh every month from 10 kattha According to farmer Ramvilas, it costs about one lakh to grow betel leaves in 10 kattha. Therefore, better production can be achieved by investing up to one thousand rupees every month. He told that it is not possible to pluck betel leaves from ten kattha in a day.
Every day about 5,000 leaves are plucked
According to him, traders buy 5,000 leaves from us and sell them in shops for 10,000. The price of our leaves in the market is Rs 2. Regarding the transaction, he told that it is sold in Khagaria, which is my home district. Apart from this, it is also sold in Begusarai, Samastipur, Bhagalpur, Sultanganj, Purnia etc. However, Ramvilas has also demanded government assistance through the media, in which he has demanded the government to give the status of horticultural crop to betel cultivation.
