The Meteorological Department cautioned farmers against growing these crops in the rain as doing so would cause large losses

Measures for farmers to deal with weather challenges: Farmers nationwide have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of monsoon rains, but the continuous downpour poses potential challenges to agricultural activities. The persistent rains may lead to waterlogging and decreased water absorption capacity of the soil, which can adversely impact crop health and yields. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings, advising farmers to implement specific measures to mitigate these impacts and maintain agricultural productivity.

Effective water drainage is crucial in these regions

In states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, parts of West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, Bihar, Uttarakhand, western Uttar Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, it is essential to establish proper mechanisms for draining excess water from fields to prevent waterlogging. These steps are vital to safeguarding crops against water-related damage.

Delay sowing of certain crops as a precaution

Farmers are advised to postpone sowing of crops such as ragi, soybeans, and maize-peanut. In regions like Konkan, transplanting of rice and ragi should be deferred temporarily. Similarly, in the Ghat areas of Central Maharashtra, delaying transplanting of rice and sowing Kharif crops like soybean, maize, and peanut is recommended. These precautions aim to protect early crop development stages from excessively wet conditions that could impede germination and growth.

Maintain proper drainage and support systems

Ensuring a well-functioning drainage system is essential to prevent root rot and water-borne diseases in plants, providing them with adequate oxygen and nutrients. Additionally, offering mechanical support to horticultural crops and vegetables can prevent damage from heavy rains and strong winds.

Monitor weather forecasts closely

Regularly monitoring weather forecasts is crucial for timely decision-making. Practices such as staking plants to maintain upright growth, prevent breakage, and improve airflow can reduce the risk of fungal infections. By adopting these strategies, farmers can safeguard their crops from the adverse impacts of prolonged rain spells. Staying informed about weather patterns and adhering to agricultural advisories enables farmers to respond effectively, enhancing crop resilience, sustainability, and productivity in challenging weather conditions.
