Transitioning from sugarcane to banana farming

Farmers in the Uttar Pradesh district of Lakhimpur Kheri are seen to be losing faith in sugarcane farming in the Dhaurahra region. Rather, they are currently becoming more inclined to grow bananas. In the regions of Khamaria, Isanagar, and Katauli, the area under banana cultivation is steadily growing. Longtime banana farmer JP Maurya said that his produce has been sent to Australia, where he is receiving profits in the thousands of rupees. More money is made from banana farming than from other crops.

30% of farmers’ perspectives in a decade

In the last ten years, farmers have added banana farming to their conventional sugarcane farming practices. Banana farming has become more profitable for around thirty percent of farmers in the Dhaurahra region compared to sugarcane farming. As a result of this transformation, the region now smells strongly of bananas and is known for banana cultivation rather than just being a sugar bowl.

Funding and education initiatives of the Department of Horticulture

The Department of Horticulture offers farmers incentives of Rs 30,000 per acre to promote the growing of bananas. According to District Horticulture Officer Mrityunjay Singh, this award is also helping to support farmers in Dhaurahra and other parts of the district.

The department is always educating farmers about the advantages and methods of growing bananas, which is why district Kheri is seeing an increase in the area used for banana farming. In the regions of Mohammedi, Dhaurahra, Bankeganj, and Nighasan, bananas are also grown.
