The ‘Calcutta Marigold‘ variety has created a new and stable source of income for farmers. Cultivation of this flower in Chhattisgarh has proved to be more cost-effective and profitable. Due to its size, color and durability, the “Calcutta” marigold variety is in high demand on the market.

According to researchers at Indira Gandhi Agricultural University in Raipur, farmers need 400-600 kg of seeds per acre for cultivating this variety. Farmers treat the variety by adding two grams of carbendazim per kilogram of seed. While sowing seeds, a distance of 30 cm is kept between the rows.

Fertigation method is giving good yield

To grow the plants well, apart from cow manure, 40 kg of nitrogen, 36 kg of phosphorus and 30 kg of potash should be added per acre. Fertigation and other contemporary irrigation techniques have increased the profitability of the production of this flower. We apply fertilizers in three stages at harvest time to enhance plant growth and flower quality. In addition, hand weeding twice is sufficient to control weeds. Insecticides such as imidacloprid or thiamethoxam are sprayed in marigold fields to control pests such as aphids and thrips. In addition, fungicides such as dicofol are used to keep the flowers healthy and prevent diseases.

12 tonnes yield per acre

Calcutta marigold is in high demand for religious events, weddings and decorations, apart from the local market. As a result, farmers can produce 9 to 12 tonnes per acre, giving them a direct income of Rs 60,000 to Rs 1 lakh per acre. In case of strong demand, this revenue can increase even further. To promote flower cultivation, the Chhattisgarh government and Krishi Vigyan Kendra Raipur are offering technical support, training and seed availability. For small and marginal farmers, promoting varieties such as Calcutta Marigold can be a significant source of revenue.

Flower production, especially of ‘Calcutta Marigold,’ is opening up new sources of revenue for farmers in states such as Chhattisgarh, where they are heavily dependent on rice. Apart from being ecologically beneficial, this crop, which is available early, is also boosting the rural economy.
