This computer engineer did wonders by setting up a dairy business, earning an annual income of Rs 23 crore

Dairy Business Successful: While many young people nowadays look for chances outside of their areas, Deepak Raj Tushir made a different decision. Raised in the Haryanan town of Janti Khurd, Deepak started his academic career with a degree in computer science engineering before earning an MBA in information technology. His credentials helped him get a lucrative 10-year job with the well-known international company Wipro. Deepak felt compelled to return to his origins and support agriculture despite the benefits of his corporate career because he wanted to leave a lasting impression on his community.

The vision Behind Setting up a Dairy Farm

His choice to turn his attention from the business sector to dairy farming in 2012 changed his course in life. He founded Binsar Farms in collaboration with two New Zealand farmers and two other computer experts, Pankaj Navani and Sukhvinder Saraf.

The Beginning of the Dairy Journey

“All three of us are from villages, and our goal is to support farmers and customers by making constructive contributions to the ecology. Our observations of the poor quality of milk in the city inspired us to establish our own dairy farm.

This idea went beyond making money to include developing a sustainable farming strategy that would benefit the neighborhood and raise the standard of living for nearby farms.

Overcoming Initial Challenges

In order to start their business, Deepak and his partners bought a one-year-old heifer, which is a young female cow that has not yet given birth. This first stage was essential to understanding the principles of dairy production. The group chose to concentrate on a crossbreed of Indian, Jersey, and HF (Holstein Friesian) dogs. These breeds were selected because they meet well-established, scientifically validated requirements and can be milked by machines, which increases agricultural productivity.

Overcoming Initial Hurdles

But there were bumps along the path. Deepak remembers the challenges that they faced from the start:

A hurdle in and of itself was buying livestock. While we were computer engineers attempting to break into a new industry, people made fun of our inexperience.

Out of the 50 cattle the crew bought, only 35 made it out alive owing to illnesses. This disappointing loss made them rethink their endeavor.

A Defining Moment

“After losing fifteen cattle, we came to the conclusion that we needed to assess the problem using our IT expertise. After weighing the cows and doing laboratory tests, we found that healthy cows were well-weighted and underweight animals were ill.

Deepak and his crew were able to better the health of their cattle and detect health problems early on by using data management approaches. Their agricultural methods were built around this analytical approach.

Building a Sustainable Dairy Business

Deepak and his associates expeditiously established procedures for the examination and handling of animals. They brought in semen from reliable suppliers with track records because they understood the value of superior genetics, which produced healthier, higher-yielding cattle. This dedication to excellence distinguished Binsar Farms from nearby rivals.

Adjusting to Market Conditions

When Deepak first tried to get reasonable pricing for their milk, they were disappointed. It was depressing for many farmers to only make Rs. 18–19 a litre after all of their efforts and investments.
It was depressing to see such little results after exerting so much effort. We needed to come up with a plan.

Deepak and his group changed course in reaction to this difficulty. They started putting their milk in bottles, which caught on with consumers who were searching for high-quality goods. As they gained a reputation for excellence, what had initially been a daily sales volume of 4 to 10 liters rapidly expanded to an astounding 7,000 to 8,000 liters.

Increasing the Range of Products

These days, a large range of dairy products are available via Deepak’s Dairy Farm’s user-friendly app. Butter, flavored milk, lassi, curd, paneer, and ghee are all available for purchase, making it easy for families to get wholesome selections. In the last six years, Deepak has changed dramatically, concentrating on the well-being and caliber of his herd and only utilizing A2 semen for breeding.

Furthermore, he has performed DNA testing on the cattle he bought from local sources and found that between 60 and 70 percent of the herd is A2-blooded. This made it possible for him to put these animals in different groups and make sure they got the right attention and pasteurization techniques.

A Comprehensive Method of Growing

Deepak is in charge of managing fifty acres of land where sorghum and maize are grown. In addition, he manages 200 acres of contract farming, where he gives other farmers advice and seeds. This helps the farmer maintain a regular source of feed for his livestock in addition to providing financial assistance.

“I want to give local farmers more control. Through exposing them to lucrative crops, we can enhance their standard of living and guarantee a consistent flow of feed for our livestock.

Deepak has 16 employees, including veterinarians and agricultural specialists, on his 11-acre property. In order to increase production and efficiency, the farm uses contemporary mechanized methods, such as PMR (Partially Mixed Ration) feeding.

Working Together for Success

In order to create fresh calf feed, Deepak has partnered with farmers in New Zealand. Through this collaboration, the cows are guaranteed the greatest nutrition available, which improves the quality of their milk and the general health of the herd.

Acceptance and Achievement

Numerous honors have been bestowed to Deepak for his creative methods and commitment to excellence. He has won six or seven accolades, including the Best Dairy Farming Award from Haryana and the Agricultural Leadership Award. With a profit margin of 5-6%, his farm turned over an amazing Rs. 23 crore last year.

“We are still dedicated to sustainable methods and ongoing learning in spite of the obstacles. Our programs assist other farmers in resolving dairy-related problems, and Amul recently paid their farmers a visit.
