A Bold Decision

41-year-old progressive farmer Vikas Kumar Jha, after completing his early education, obtained a BCA (Bachelor of Computer Application) degree and worked in the IT sector for a few years. However, he soon decided to quit his job in the city and return to his roots in the village, i.e. agriculture. Vikas felt that through farming he could do something better for his family and society.

It was very challenging to meet financial needs

On returning to the village, Vikas started cultivating paddy and maize on his ancestral 35 bigha land. But he soon realized that the cultivation of these crops was not giving the expected profit. The income was very low and it was very challenging to meet the financial needs of the family. One day, his thinking changed after attending an awareness program organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra in the village. In this program, he learned about the benefits of fish farming and showed his interest in it. Experts from Krishi Vigyan Kendra made him aware of the technical and commercial aspects of fish farming, after which he decided to adopt fish farming commercially.

Facing Challenges

In the beginning, the journey of fish farming was not easy. Many challenges, like pond construction, selection of fish species, and lack of technical knowledge, made the path of Vikas difficult. But he did not give up. He consulted the scientists of Krishi Vigyan Kendra and used the right technology for pond construction under their guidance. The depth, width and water quality of the pond were ensured so that the growth of the fish could be better.

Success in Fish Farming

Today, Vikas has 10 ponds, which are spread over about 10 bighas of land. In these ponds, he rears advanced species of fish like Amur Carp, Jayanti Rohu, Grass Carp, Silver Carp, Mrigal, and Cat Fish. To take care of these fish, he regularly checks the quality of the pond water and gives nutritious food to the fish. He has adopted techniques like home-made feed, floating feed, and dust feed as feed. If ever the fish face any disease, he immediately contacts the Krishi Vigyan Kendra so that they can get the right treatment and guidance.

Vikas’s fish farming has been so successful that he is earning 8 to 10 lakh rupees annually from it. Due to the high quality of the fish and proper care, the fish from his ponds are in great demand in the market.

Fish Seed Production

Apart from fish farming, Vikas Kumar Jha also produces fish seed. He told that he produces fish seed twice a year, in which the one-time cost is about two lakh rupees, while it gives a profit of up to Rs 5 lakh. In this way, Vikas earns about Rs 10 lakh annually from fish seed production. The increasing demand for fish seed in the market inspires him to grow continuously in this field.

Role of Krishi Vigyan Kendra

Krishi Vigyan Kendra has played an important role in the success story of Vikas Kumar Jha. He not only received technical assistance for fish farming and fish seed production but also got guidance from experts for pond construction, selection of fish species and their nutrition. The training and awareness programs organized from time to time by Krishi Vigyan Kendra played an important role in the success of Vikas.

Social and Economic Change

This success of Vikas Kumar Jha has not only improved the economic condition of his family but has also inspired other farmers of his village and surrounding areas. Now many farmers come to him to learn about fish farming and fish seed production. His success has proved that if farmers work hard with the right information and technical support, then there are immense possibilities in the field of agriculture.
